What recent form tells you — and what it does not
The last five matches show useful signals, but opponent quality and context explain more than a string of letters.
Why use a recent window
Recent matches better reflect the current coach, players and rhythm. Five games are easy to read but remain a small sample, sensitive to red cards and difficult schedules.
Results do not tell the whole story
A win may hide a poor display and a defeat may include strong chance creation. Combine results with goals, opportunities and the full 90-minute performance.
Opponent strength changes the meaning
Beating lower-table sides is not the same as facing title contenders. Venue, rest and competition also affect the weight of each result.
Home, away and contextual change
Separate home and away performance, and check whether the coach, system or key players changed during the sample.
A run is not automatically a trend
A sequence becomes a trend only when stable indicators and comparable contexts support it. Otherwise performance may quickly return to its normal level.
A balanced reading
Use recent form as a starting point. Compare a longer window and lower confidence when signals disagree.
